Let the Controversies Begin!

For your first blog post you have three controversy choices that you may chose to engage with. Though you are welcome to take your post in a personal direction, I'll provide some prompts to help guide you in your post. The first controversy, "Sorting the Imposters from the Real Nutrition Experts," encourages you to consider the panoply of information that you are regularly inundated by in your daily life. Are there nutrition claims, products, or debates that you have questioned, used, or ignored as a consumer? Using some of the recommendations from the text, frame and contextualize the scenario. Engage with the variety of popular sources, academic sources, or psuedo-academic claims that may have helped guide or confuse you. The second controversy, "Are Some Foods Superfoods for Health?" is loosely related to the first controversy. Perhaps you could consider one superfood, or group thereof and provide a critical survey of the discourse. It can be a food or group of foods that you consumer regularly, intend to incorporate into your diet, or may be very suspicious of. Consider the way that food companies use this discourse to market their products. The third controversy, "Alcohol and Nutrition: Do the Benefits Outweigh the Risks?" considers two poles of alcohol consumption in addition to providing an operational definition for "moderate alcohol consumption." Consider your own alcohol prevalence in relationship to the myriad discourse on the wellness outcomes associated with consuming alcohol. How might this influence the way you discuss alcohol use in the college setting with a younger sibling about to begin their first year of college?
